The Breslin, Babycakes, and Sugar Sweet Sunshine- A Sweeeet Day!

Alright, so there are lots of places that I was able to review today. Three down. Yes! Ok, we're gonna start off with the main meal which I had at the Breslin. I only wanted one thing. The chargrilled lamb burger with feta, chipotle mayo, and thrice cooked chips. Thrice cooked chips is some fancy pants phrase for french fries which I guess were fried three times?

Soooo anyways, here it is. In all its glory. I saw practically every table getting this so it is without a doubt popular. On to the stuff. So, while I was trying the chipotle mayo I recognized the flavor as something arabic I've eaten before but couldn't place. I realized it tasted exactly like the inside of a falafel! The french fries were nice and crisp, but soft on the inside. Nice fries. The burger was cooked medium rare which I've never had before but it didn't really bother me. The feta added a nice saltyness to the burger and the bun was crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. It could absorb all of that chipotle mayo but still hold up to the thick burger patty. The patty was really flavorful and kept falling apart, probably cuz of its semi-rareness. It was a good burger, different from what I usually have.

Next up, Sugar Sweet Sunshine. Starting with the left, it's a sexy red velvet which is basically a red velvet cupcake with "the moose" which I am assuming to be whipped cream (at least that's what it tasted like). The frosting tasted like whipped cream so I wasn't wowed by it and the cake was somewhat moist and chocolatey so it was ok. I also got a 4 oz cup of half banana pudding and half chocolate bomb (shown separately cuz it would have pictured weirdly). The banana pudding is similar to the one at Magnolia's. It has the same things (nilla wafers, banana pudding, bananas) and tasted somewhat identical so basically, I'll get whichever one is cheaper. Classic banana pudding. The chocolate bomb was chocolate pudding with chocolate cake pieces mixed in. Definitely for chocolate lovers. It was chocolate on top of chocolate, almost too much. Smooth creamy pudding with soft chocolate cake makes for a good few bites.

Finally, Babycakes. I tried quite a few things from here. This place is excellent if you have allergies to anything really. THeyre gluten free, egg free, they use spelt, agave instead of sugar. Very healthy-ish. First up were the agave sweetened brownie. Theyre little bites that could be eaten in four or so bites. Very chocolatey and dense, tasted like a brownie! I was shocked it wasn't too bad. Then I had a chocolate chip donut cuz the lady behind the counter said those were her favorite. The cake itself was so moist! Reminded me of the inside of a regular cake donut! And there was a nice glaze and chocolate chips on top which added a nice crunch! Not too shabby for a BAKED donut!

Finally, the chocolate chip cookie sandwich with frosting and the banana cupcake with chocolate frosting. The chocolate chip cookie sandwich is supposed to be really popular and it was pretty good. The cookies were crunchy and studded with chocolate chips. The frosting was vanilla I think which they use on the cupcakes and it wasnt too sweet and very smooth. Kinda like a whoopie pie but with cookies! Next up the banana cupcake was very moist and had such a strong banana flavor. The chocolate frosting was a bit much for me as the chocolate was very overpowering. Normally I like chocolate and banana together but not this time. So, all in all it was a pretty awesome place for being so accomodating of people's allergies without compromising flavor. At the end of the day, I tried some really good food!

Clinton St Baking Company- Coconut Pancakes!!!

I told you it would happen and it has. Round two! This round was coconut pancakes! and because I had kumquats at scarpetta the day before, I HAD to have these pancakes. So the pancakes were coconut pancakes with kumquat syrup and bruleed bananas.
Let me assure you, mine had waaaaaay more shredded coconuts. But anyhow, I'll say that the pancakes did taste a bit different, but it was a subtle coconut flavor. The pancakes were still light and fluffy. I didnt really taste a difference with the bruleed bananas. Just tasted like bananas really. The shredded coconut got annoying to eat after a while. The kumquats were sweet  but I'm not sure how well they went with the coconut pancakes. The syrup was awesome as always. I didn't think that these pancakes were that special. I think it was just ok. I liked the pumpkin ones A LOT more, way more flavor. I think I'm gonna be off of pancakes for a while though.

Scarpetta!

So, Scarpetta is a restaurant owned by Scott Conant. I've seen him on Food Network a few times and hes well known for making awesome pasta. So when I heard Ted Allen saying that one of the best things he ever ate was his spaghetti at Scarpetta I thought I would be hitting two birds with one stone. I could check out this fancy guy's restaurant AND cross something off of my food list. So off we went. We started with this huge bread basket. It had a stromboli thing it which I thought was really cool since no restaurants do sandwiches in bread baskets but I didn't try it. The bread basket is also served with three dips: the white is marscarpone butter, eggplant marinara, and olive oil. Each one was really good. I liked the marscarpone butter because it was like butter but had a slightly different taste and was really creamy. The eggplant marinara was really tomato-y and eggplant-y. Really strong eggplant flavor but I liked it. The olive oil was really flavorful too, very herby.

Now I heard that his other signature dish was polenta and being that I never had polenta before, I thought trying it here would be best since he's like the pasta master. It was creamy polenta with a fricassee of truffled mushrooms.
I have no idea what fricassee is, all I know is it must mean gooood. lol. I love truffle anything and I dont hate mushrooms and this was his signature dish so how could we not order it. So first off it came without the stuff on top. The mushroom truffle sauce is served in the metal pot and they pour it right over the creamy polenta when it gets to the table. The polenta itself is cornmeal and it was really smooth and creamy. It didnt really taste like anything, maybe buttery. Most of the flavor came from the truffled mushroom sauce which was spot on. Really creamy with a rich sauce. I love truffles. Always a good choice. Now we followed that with the spaghetti with tomato and basil.
So that was what we were there for. I know its a simple dish. But supposedly it was executed very well. Lemme tell ya. This pasta was perfectly cooked. Its in between al dente and soft. I usually have really mushy spagehtti so this was a nice change. And the tomato and basil sauce was actually really good. You could tell it was made fresh and it just had such an herby powerful taste. Though I have to say, maybe I'm just a simpleton but it was still spaghetti, albeit really good spaghetti. We finished up with two chocolate desserts.

Sorry I don't have a picture of the other one. I did take a picture but its too dark to tell, and since its a new addition to the menu there arent any online so sorry about that. This here is a chocolate amdei cake with salted caramel gelato and chocolate butterscotch. The cake itself was very chocolate-y and dense and in the center it was very fudgy but not like a molten cake. Very chocolate-y. I have to say that the star was the salted caramel gelato. It was the perfect salty-sweet. The caramel was smooth and just awesome. The other desert was a chocolate budino with spiced cranberry sauce and a kumquat confit. It was essentially a chocolate mousse. The cranberry sauce was a bit tart but not overpowering. I had never tried kumquat before so that was interesting. I found that I like kumquats. Theyre like a citrus fruit thats sweet , kinda like an orange. I think it was a good citrus-chocolate combo. So overall, I think scarpetta was ok, maybe it's just me but I'm not sure if I would go back, unless I'm rich.

Clinton St Baking Company- Pumpkin Pancakes!!!

It's PANCAKE MONTH!!! Ahhhhhhh!!! I love pancakes. Light, fluffy bundles of joy. At Clinton St. Baking Company, they know how to make a mean pancake. I've had the famous blueberry ones and honestly I don't remember how good it was but I remember it must have been good but I had it a while ago so when I knew that pancake month was coming I would have to try their pancakes cuz they all sounded soooo good! I wanted to go every day but you gotta pick the good ones. Look out for more posts because pancake month is not over yet! First pancakes were japanese pumpkin! It was a japanese pumpkin pancake with pumpkin seed streusel and warm maple butter. But hold on, before we get to the pancakes there are other yummy things you can't miss. I had heard that their biscuits were stellar as well and thank god they came complimentary AKA FREE!! Two per person! I ate those babies with butter and this housemade strawberry jam shown below.

Can I get a MMMMMMMM! look at that! You can see the fruit in the jam! I'm pretty sure they were strawberry seeds and that jam was the SHIZ!! It tasted sooo fresh and sweet and such a strong strawberry taste. I used this stuff on the pancakes too! It was THAT GOOD. Moving on, Mariam got a hot chocolate which was eh. I didnt really like it, too bitter even after adding sugar. Now, the real star of the show. THE PANCAKES!

Look at that. Isn't it beautiful? Thank god we both split this because after the biscuits and hot chocolate we were left wondering how anyone eats a whole order by themselves cuz we were sooo full. But we were full off of yummy goodness. The pancakes were, as always, very light and fluffy. And they were pumpkin flavored! Who does that? I love pumpkin so this got the thumbs up from me. It also came with a pumpkin streusal thingy that was really crunchy and kinda tasted oaty too- I really liked it. And that warm maple butter was really good too. I like adequate amounts of syrup for my pancakes and found that small little ramekin was not enough for three whole pancakes. I mean come on, look at how little it is! But I think it's part of their marketing technique. Give little amounts of goodness and people will definitely buy an extra side of syrup for $2 (myself included). I also used jam though but it was well worth the money. We left there very full and excited to try the next type of pancakes. Updates next week!

Mimi's Pizza and Sprinkles Cupcakes!!!

Hey y'all. So, yesterday I finished class early and had quite a bit of time to dilly dally. And what does Youssra do when I have time to kill? If you thought eat, then you know me very well my friend. Mona wanted an arepa from Caracas sooo I went to get me some grub first and then made my way down there. I started off with a slice of pizza from Mimi's Pizza as suggested by Bobby Flay. I was in a pizza mood so it sounded like a good idea. I picked a slice that had fresh mozzarella and basil as opposed to the greasier regular slice. I'm sorry but there is no picture. If you see a slice that has really white mozzarela and lots of green distributed throughout, that's probably it (kinda looks like a margherita slice). This was like the worst sllice of pizza I have ever had. Ok, it wasnt that bad but it was pretty crappy. I was so disappointed cuz I was hungry too. I kept asking myself WHERE'S the SAUCE?????? Seriously. It was like eating bread and cheese. No good sauce-y flavor. Ugh. And even the bread and cheese stunk. No flavor. I had to add some Oregano just to add a little herbal taste to it but still. Pretty crappy. Never again. If I want a good slice, I'l go to the pizzeria across the street because its cheaper-$2.25 as opposed to the atrocious$4 price tag of said slice. AVOID!

Sprinkles was next because they had released a tweet about the first 50 people getting a free mystery cupcake and I was only one express stop away. I ran there to be one of the first people and I was. SCORE! But I was originally gonna go that day because I had a coupon for a free cupcake so now I have three for only $3.50!! Niiiiice. I picked the Red Velvet cupcake and pumpkin cupcake. The free one ended up being a vanilla cake with strawberry frosting. I have pictures!

The red velvet one was more chocolatey than most red velvet cupcakes I have had. Usually red velvet is not as chocolatey but this cupcake I could've mistaken for a chocolate one. The cake was moist and the cream cheese frosting was not too sweet. Pretty good but not the best I've ever had.

Next up, pumpkin. A spiced pumpkin cupcake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting This was my favorite of the three. The cake itself was really soft and the flavor was so so seasonal and just screamed pumpkin. It was a nice orange/borwn and you could see and taste some of the spices. Cinnamon cream cheese-mmmm. silky smooth and the cinnamon flavor is very subtle.

The vanilla cupcake with strawberry frosting was good too! It was first a mystery and I guessed that it was vanilla with strawberry frosting and I later overheard one of the girls say thats what the flavor was. Go palate. Anyhow, the cake is like a yellow cake and strawberry frosting is subtle. I find that all of the flavors of these cupcakes are subtle.

Mmmmmmm look at that. Does that not look delicious to you? Believe me, it was. It was a chocolate chip studded peanut butter cake withe milk chocolate frosting and chocolate sprinkles. It was the perfect balance of chocolate and peanut butter. Sometimes the peanut butter can become overpowering, but not here. It was perfectly balanced by the chocolate chipps and the chocolate frosting. The peanut butter cake was soft and had a perfect crunch from che chocolate chips followed by smooth milky chocolate and chocolate sprinkles. I liked it.

This was a vanilla cake with coconut cream cheese frosting and shredded coconut. I liked this one because I like coconut. The cake was awesome and the frosting was sooo creamy and with the shredded coconut I justthought everything went together well.
Last, but certainly not least, the salted caramel cupcake. It's a caramel cake with a buttery caramel cream cheese frosting topped with fleur de sel. Fleur de sel is just a fancy french phrase for sea salt. I loved this one. Mainly because i am a HUGE fan of the salty sweet thing in desserts. So the caramel cake was sweet especially with the frosting but then it was cut with those little sprinkles of sea salt to balance it out. So good. I think its only until the end of february as a special flavor so get it soon! After trying a bit of all of these (not at one time of course, the last three were a day after but I didn't wanna make a separate post), I am definitely a fan of Sprinkles. I'm going back to try some more later cuz I'm a little over cupcakes at the moment haha. But you should too!
